About the Author

  Welcome to Top Shelf Text!

I'm Madeleine, the bookworm behind the blog.

I'm a twenty-something New Englander with an immense love for everything bookish. When I'm not wrapped up in my latest read, I'm working as a special education teacher, taking long walks, trying out new recipes, learning to knit, sew, or out on the golf course! I love my kitty, very large mugs of tea, all things Harry Potter, and early bedtimes.

The Mission Behind Top Shelf Text

I love to read, but even more, I love to talk about literature! I was lucky to grow up in a household that is practically filled to the brim with books (seriously, our shelves are perpetually overflowing), and I want to spread that love of reading as much as possible. This is a space for me to share the books I've been loving, those I've been lusting after, and anything related to being a bibliophile!

You'll notice that some of the content here is focused on children's literature. As an educator, one of my biggest goals is to help engage children in loving the written word. Reading is so, so important to healthy development. I cannot begin to describe the joy of seeing a child learn to love reading! Here you'll find recommendations to share with your favorite littles, as well as my favorite reads to add to your own wish list.

  1. Just started following you today and have purchased two of your recommendations "A Study in Charlotte" and "A Bridge Across the Ocean" on audible to listen to on my morning commute. Love your blog.

    1. Carol,

I would love to hear what you think of the audio versions! A Bridge Across the Ocean was a particular favorite of mine so far this year. Historical fiction + ghost stories? Sign me up!

  2. I just listened to your podcast with Anne Bogel and I probably identified more with that episode than any other. I rarely reply but I just had to add (3) recommendations for you as well!
    1. Because of your newfound love for "Anne" - please consider my all time favorite book, "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". Also, if you have not see the 1985 Film version of "Anne of Green Gables" with Megan Follows, do it now!!
    2. Because of your love of Sherlock Holmes - please consider the Mary Russell ("Beekeeper's Apprentice") series by Laurie King. I adore them ALL.
    3. Because of your love of mysteries and poison, try the TV show "Reign" about Mary Queen of Scots. Totally escapist fun. AND bonus: Queen Catherine de' Medici is played by Megan Follows - and needless to say she is VERY different than when she was "Anne". Which is jarring and super fun! :)

    1. I am so happy that you hopped over to the blog to comment because you are spot on!!

      1. That has been recommended to me so many times this year! It's on my summer reading list! (And I will be hunting down the 1985 Anne -- thanks for recommending it!)
      2. I have read the first in the Mary Russell series and loved it. More are on my list.
      3. I LOVE that show! I'm not done watching it all yet but it's so funny you mention it because it's one of my favorites!

Obviously you have fabulous taste and we must chat more. Send me an email if you'd like to trade more recommendations!

  3. Yes! I really want to hear your feedback on "Tree" and the 1985 series. These were the anchors of my own childhood. And it is hilarious to me you will know Megan as Catherine before you know her as Anne, LOL.

Are you on GoodReads? I'd love to link up: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/775940-kris
